Fuel pickup - no lift pump?

Post by Roccola » Wed Mar 17, 2021 12:38 pm

Just sorting usual dirty fuel cutting out issues on my '88 mk2 1.6 gt and decided to replace fuel lift pump and filter just in case. Undid the fuel sender unit 'special nut' to find... nothing.
No sign of a pump. Just the sender float and a straight pickup pipe with a slightly flared end. I remember reading that some don't have the pump, but I expected a bit more in terms of a filter - I have seen a picture of a straight pipe with a domed filter on the end, but this just has a bit of plastic mesh over the end of the pipe. Any thoughts?

There is no lift pump on carb-equipped Sciroccos - a much simpler setup in the tank - just a small plastic strainer at the end of the pick-up tube

You'll find a couple of pictures at the bottom of this page:

Other than that, the main filter is the paper one under the bonnet and a fine mesh filter in the carb inlet tube (at least on the Pierburg).

Thanks mate. I just found the answer myself in my just arrived old version Haynes manual...but really appreciate the reassurance. I've been using the modern Haynes for the Mk2 Golf (which doesn't include either the Mk2 Scirocco or Mk1 Golf, so not much use). Can breathe easier now. Cheers.
Pierburg refurb is next.

Good for you for sticking with the Pierburg. Excellent unit and far better than the Webber 'upgrade' option. Touted as a plug in and play but anything but in my experience. Poor fuel economy, less power (only 74 hp when tested on a rolling road, my 1.6 should have 85 hp) and who would want to downgrade to a manual choke?

VW Bromyard overhauled my crusty Pierburg that was sat in a box in the boot when I bought the car in 2018. Absolute gent and very very thorough. He found a few other issues I didn't even know about in the engine bay while refitting it.

However, if you're having ongoing rust issues it would be obviously beneficial to check the entire fuel system. In particular, the fuel neck, the tank contents while you have the sender out and, in my case, replace the hard fuel lines to and from the engine bay. It was these that had the most corrosion internally and where all the rust in my clear engine bay fuel filter was coming from.

Funny thing was, they looked immaculate externally. Mark 1 Golf lines will fit the Mk2 Sciroccos:

Anyway, good luck with her!
